In my childhood, I was always asked to “think out of the box”. Truly speaking, at that time I was not at all fan of this phrase until I took an initiative for setting up my own venture. Taking the initiative, what I learned was – to establish a successful venture you need three things: encouragement, initiative, and “think out of the box”.

In this article, I have mainly focused on the third part, as I feel it is the key part of every success.

Before exploding the question how a person can think out of the box, let me first describe you the exact meaning of this phrase.


“Think out of the box” - the phrase typically defines to think beyond the bounds of your imagination. That is more creatively and beyond the tried and true. If I ask you to “think out of the box”, it means I am asking you to think something original, something unique, something different from others that will make you distinct from the crowd.

Now the question is how to create success by thinking outside the box. Here are the six ways that will help you to think broadly and more creatively, thus ranking you in number 1 position among the others.

1. Appreciate creativity: It is been said, if you want greater creativity, you first need to let others know about their own importance. Appreciating others' creative work will, in turn, reward you for being creative. It is your duty or responsibility to let people know that you appreciate their ideas. If you won't appreciate others' thoughts, do you think they will appreciate yours? Of course, not. Well, it is not just rewarding or greeting others thoughts and ideas. It is about learning the way they present their ideas and thoughts. Knowing about others will help you to think more like them, maybe something differently, maybe in a more better way.

2. Expect New Ideas: Along with rewarding and appreciating creativity, you should have a positive expectancy about the quantity and quality of the ideas you perceive. Learn about the new ideas and be more practical in what you say. After all, the idea that doesn't have any logic or can't be executed is worthless.

3. Spend More Time: Creativity lies within yourself – it is not just a phrase. But it is a true fact that every single individual has his own creative mind. And for that, you need to give a specific amount of time. It is not easy for every individual to be creative in their field whenever you demand or just in a deadline. Take some time and refresh your mind so that it can soak new ideas and let you think about new ideas.

4. Be confident: Are you confident with the idea that you want to execute? First, ask yourself before making any mistake. No one wants to make mistake in their work. They want to present a flawless work that is appreciated by all. So to get more bold ideas and innovative segments, you should get rid of the fear of making mistakes. Always be ready to take the unexpected challenges and acknowledge the innovation associated with it. This will certainly act as a trigger of encouragement and help you to achieve the goal in future.

5. Self-Experiment: Before asking others to create new, bold, and innovative ideas finally, it is important that you experiment them yourself, at the initial stage. Are you likely to present your own idea? Or it is a joint venture? Whatever it may be, if you are a person who is willing to think outside the box yourself and want others to do so, first model the behaviour before asking the same from others.
